HBFF & ABFF Make June A Great Month For Cultural Travel

June is Black Music Month, but bookending the month are two of the most influential Black film festivals.
Going on right now in Beverly Hills is the Hollywood Black Film Festival (June 2nd - 7th) now in its 10th year.
HBFF opened on Tuesday evening with a screening of writer/producer Preston Whitmore’s “Dough Boys” (“This Christmas”) and features a full slate of enough independent film fare to get you through the week.
On the backside of June, the American Black Film Festival (which has had a couple of different iterations since it launched in 1997) kicks off in Miami on 24th and continues to the 27th with the lovely Sanaa Lathan just announced as the Grand Jury President.
Ms. Lathan and festival attendees will view the selected films that fall into categories such as Narrative Features, Short Films, Documentaries, etc...
So whether you are in sunny LA or sunny South Florida, these two premier Black film festivals offer you a bit of escape from the heat into darkened screening rooms to enjoy some good cinema.
But June, being the month of split-personality Gemini’s also offers some great music with the 17th annual Capital Jazz Festival that runs June 5th - 7th in the Washington, D.C, suburb of Columbia, MD.
Either way you go, June is all good for cultural travel!

29 Spa At The Mansion In Atlanta

Usually Palm Springs, Sedona and other such western destinations come to mind when you think of the top US spas, but Atlanta has an entry on the 2009 Condé Nast Traveler'sTop 10 Spas list. It's the 29 Spa located in the upscale The Mansion on Peachtree hotel.
But this anomaly doesn't completely defy reason, there was a westerner who had a hand in creating 29 Spa, Lydia Mondavi. You might recognize that last name from the wine aisle at the grocery store. Lydia Mondavi is a fifth-generation decendent of the famous Napa Valley wine family. So it is also no surpise then that anti-oxident -rich grape seed based treatments and products play a large role in 29 Spa's offerings.
Next layover in the ATL don't just hang out at the airport, head to the 29 Spa for a few hours of rejuvenation.

Time To Start Planning Your Memorial Day Getaway

One silver lining of the economic slowdown is that it is creating some real travel bargain opportunities for those who still have the chips to take advantage of them. With the official kick-off of the summer season, Memorial Day, just a month away, now is the time to look into some of those bargains. I mean, for just about the cost of gassing up the ride to head to Mama and them, you could be sunning on a pristine beach on St. John, partying it up in St. Thomas or just "liming" in St. Croix!
The US Virgin Islands and the airlines have recently been promoting special deal packages to encourage tourist travel and now might just be the time to look into those offers. Each of the Virgins has its own unique character, so see which one works best for your ideal vacation scenario or just island hop and spend a little time on each.
Create a Memorial Day memory that will be more lasting than your inebriated Uncle Buddy trying to do the Stanky Leg. You know it's gonna happen!!
