New Senagalese Monument Taller Than Statue of Liberty
Senegal has officially unveiled its African Renaissance Monument which is taller than the Statue of Liberty. In a celebration on April 3-4, the statue celebrating Senegal's 50th anniversary of freedom from European colonial rule, was dedicated to African unity in general and features the flags of Africa's nations at its base.
The bronze monument, cast and erected by North Korean crews outside of the capital city of Dakar, is not without controversy, however. Islamic traditionalists in this primarily Muslim country have taken exception with the scanty wardrobe of the female figure which reveals cleavage and thighs in a very un-Muslim like way. Feminist groups have charged that she also appears and subservient to the strong male figure. And, last but not least, Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade is reported to be personally earning 35% of all revenues derived from the statue...because it was his idea (Dang!! Barack ought to see if he can get that kind of deal with all the ideas he has!!), but he has pledged to use the funds to build schools across Africa. We shall see.
